Discussion of a master’s thesis in the College of Science

A master’s thesis entitled “Isolation and partial technology of xanthine oxidase enzyme and its relationship to some biochemical variables in the blood serum of patients with high uric acid” was discussed in the department of Chemistry in our College on Wednesday, the 22nd of February, 2023.Part of it was attended by the dean of the college, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the dean’s assistant for scientific and administrative affairs, the head of the chemistry department, and a number of the college’s academic staff. The submitted thesis by (Rana Falah Jamil Qasim) in the Biochemistry branch dealt with two parts:The first is to estimate the concentration of uric acid and measure the activity of the enzyme xanthine oxidase in the blood serum of patients with high uric acid and their relationship to some measured biochemical variables that included (alkaline phosphatase, sialic acid, malondialdehyde, glutathione, vitamin D3, C, E, albumin, urea, creatinine, calcium and phosphorus). The results showed a significant increase in the level of uric acid, the activity of the enzyme xanthine oxidase, sialic acid, malondialdehyde, urea, creatinine, vitamin C, and phosphorus, while it showed a significant decrease in the level of glutathione, vitamin D3, and E.The second part included isolation and partial purification of xanthine oxidase enzyme from the blood serum of patients with high uric acid, using various biotechnologies including ammonium sulfate precipitation, dialysis, and gel filtration using Cefidex (G-200) for the protein precipitate. The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Louay Abd Ali Al-Hilali, and the membership of Dr. Muhammad Fadel Hamid/ Assistant Professor from the Northern Technical University, Dr. Mahmoud Ahmed Muhammad Fakhry/ lecturer, and Dr. Laila Abdullah Mustafa/ Assistant Professor as a committee member and the student supervisor.
