Workshop on How to Handle Nuclear Radiation

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Waheed Mahmood Al-Ebrahimi, and with the supervision of the Dean of the College of Science, Professor Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim Al-Taie, a workshop was held on Sunday, June 29, 2025, in the Department of Physics titled “How to Handle Nuclear Radiation.”
The workshop was delivered by Professor Dr. Firas Mohammed Ali and was attended by the Administrative Assistant Dean, Assistant Professor Dr. Omar Adel Sharif, along with a number of faculty members and postgraduate students.
The workshop addressed key topics such as:
-
The definition, sources, and types of radioactive contamination
-
Methods of exposure to radioactive pollution
-
Health risks caused by radiation exposure
-
Environmental hazards associated with radiation and how to handle contaminated areas
The session emphasized that radiation has no properties that allow people to see, feel, or taste it—making it difficult to detect in the event of an incident. However, the workshop highlighted several precautionary steps to reduce the risk of contamination:
-
Leave the affected area immediately and head to the nearest safe building as directed by authorities and medical personnel.
-
Remove outer clothing to reduce the risk of external or internal contamination, and minimize radiation exposure time.
-
Place contaminated clothing in a plastic bag and keep it away from people to prevent radiation spread. If there are any wounds, they should be covered before touching any contaminated items.
-
Wash exposed parts of the body thoroughly with warm water and soap, avoiding contact with uncontaminated areas to prevent spreading.
-
If authorities confirm a possibility of internal contamination, individuals may take prescribed medication to reduce radioactive substances in the body.
Wishing all our college members continued success and dedication.
