🌿 PhD Dissertation on Biodiversity in Hamidat and Hammam Al-Alil, Nineveh Province

The Department of Biology at the College of Science, University of Mosul, discussed on Sunday, August 24, 2025, the PhD dissertation entitled:
“A Taxonomic Study of Biodiversity in Hamidat and Hammam Al-Alil Regions in Nineveh Province”,
submitted by the student Ali Ahmed Jassim Al-Hamdani from the Botany branch, in the presence of the Head of Department and several faculty members.

The dissertation focused on the collection and classification of plant samples from Hamidat and Hammam Al-Alil, after dividing them into three study sites. It identified the most widespread species, as well as endangered species (if any), with the aim of protecting and conserving them. The study also included genetic analysis of selected plant species belonging to different families, to reveal phylogenetic relationships based on morphological traits and DNA analysis using PCR techniques.

📊 Key Findings:

  • The research documented 165 plant species belonging to 35 plant families.

  • The results provide a valuable scientific database for environmental planning and future academic research.

👩‍🏫 Discussion Committee Members:

  • Prof. Dr. Jinan Abdul Khaliq Saeed (Chair)

  • Prof. Dr. Hussein Saber Mohammed Ali

  • Prof. Dr. Abd Ahmed Hassan Ardini

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Maha Akram Al-Rajbo

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Wasan Saleh Hussein

  • Asst. Prof. Dr. Fathi Abdullah Mandeel (Member & Supervisor)

On behalf of the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the Head of Department presented a Letter of Appreciation to Prof. Dr. Abd Ahmed Hassan Ardini from the College of Education for Pure Sciences / University of Tikrit, in recognition of his scientific contribution and efforts despite the travel hardships.

🌍 Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • Life on Land (Goal 15): Documenting and classifying plant species and protecting endangered ones.

  • Climate Action (Goal 13): Using plant diversity as an environmental indicator of climate change.

  • Quality Education & Innovation (Goals 4 & 9): Applying modern techniques such as DNA-PCR analysis to advance scientific research.

  • Sustainable Cities & Communities (Goal 11): Providing a scientific database to support environmental and developmental planning in Nineveh Province.
