PhD thesis discusses the role of cholecystokinin and its relationship with chemobiotic variables before and after gastric sleeve

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, the Department of Chemistry at the College of science at the University of Mosul discussed the doctoral dissertation tagged ” cholecystokinin and its relationship to some biochemical variables before and after gastric sleeve ” by student Najla Salem Mohammed. The dean of the college, prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, the dean’s assistants, the head of the department, and a number of College teachers attended part of the discussion.

The thesis dealt with several main axes :

  • The first axis: studying the possibility of adopting the hormone cholecystokinin as an early diagnostic indicator of a person’s predisposition to excessive obesity before resorting to gastric sleeve surgery for both sexes. The results showed that the hormone cholecystokinin significantly affects the clinical and biochemical variables, body mass index, metabolism before and after surgery, which makes it an effective tool for estimating therapeutic response and minimizing complications.
  • The second axis: isolation and characterization of fatty acids in obese individuals and comparing them with those with normal weight, to identify fatty acids associated with weight gain.
  • The third axis: isolating the gene responsible for obesity through the hormone receptor, and determining the sequence of nitrogenous bases associated with obesity.

The Sustainable Development Goals associated with the thesis:

  • Goal 3: good health and well-being: to study the effect of the hormone cholecystokinin on biochemical variables before and after gastric sleeve surgery, which contributes to improving the diagnostic monitoring of patients and the provision of appropriate health care.
  • Goal 4: quality of Education: enrich scientific research in the fields of biochemistry, biology and pharmacy, and provide accurate results that can be a practical reference for students and researchers, thus enhancing the quality of higher education and Applied Research.
  • Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and infrastructure : develop innovative diagnostic methods based on biomarkers, paving the way for Personalized Medicine and linking genetic mutations to patients ‘ response to surgical treatment of obesity.
  • Goal 10 : reduce inequalities: publish standardized health follow-up protocols for patients in different centers, reducing health gaps between genders and different age groups, and promoting equity in health care.
  • Goal 12 : responsible consumption and production: to guide patients towards healthy sustainable dietary patterns based on hormonal and biochemical changes after gastric sleeve surgery, thereby reducing the risk of weight recovery and improving overall health.

The discussion Committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Elham Mohammed al-Khashab, and the membership of:

Assistant professor Dr. Mohammed Fadel Hamid.

Assistant professor Dr. Safa Abdel Aziz.

Assistant professor Dr. Amal Taha .

Assistant professor Dr. Khadija Yunus .

Under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Zeina Abdel Moneim .

At the end of the discussion, the dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to assistant professor Dr. Mohammed Fadel Hamid, from the Medical Technical Institute / Northern Technical University – Mosul, in appreciation of his scientific efforts and active participation in the discussion of the thesis.
