Discussion of a doctoral dissertation in the Department of Chemistry at the College of Science – University of Mosul

The tagged doctoral thesis was discussed in the Department of Chemistry at the college of Sciences on Thursday, September 18, 2025:

“Partial Purification of Periostin and Evaluation of its Relationship to Some Biochemical Markers and its Molecular Study in Blood of Patients with Behcet Disease in Iraq and Therapeutic Effect of The Active Compounds Extracted from Vitex Agnus-Castus in Mice with Behcet Disease”

For the student Mahmoud Abdul Hamid Hazem al-Qazzaz from the Department of chemistry.

The thesis dealt with four main axes:

  • Measure the level of Periostin protein in the blood of Behcet patients and compare it with healthy ones, correlating it with immunological and biochemical indicators.
  • Isolation and partial purification of the Periostin protein and determination of its molecular weight using advanced Biotechnologies.
  • Isolation and diagnosis of active compounds from the Vitex Agnus-Castus plant using the HPLC technique, studying their therapeutic effect at the Periostin level in mice with the disease.
  • Study of gene expression of the Periostin protein in patients and healthy.

The discussion Committee was chaired by Professor Dr. waiting Rifat Samin, and the membership of both:

Prof. Dr. Zahra Mohamed Ali Ahmed Mustafa

Assistant professor Dr. Saba Zaki Mahmoud Khader

Assistant professor Dr. Mohammed Bahri Hassan Abdul

Assistant professor Dr. Safa Abdul Aziz Taha Amin

Under the supervision and membership of assistant prof. Dr. Leila Abdullah Mustafa Abdullah.

Part of the discussion was attended by the dean of the college, professor Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, the dean’s assistants, the head of the department, and a number of the faculty’s best teachers.

Mrs. dean of the faculty presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Prof. Dr. waiting Rifaat Serhat Semin from the Faculty of Dentistry / Tikrit University, in appreciation of his efforts and the trouble of traveling.

The thesis focuses on a number of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

The third goal: good health and well-being, through the study of biomarkers and the search for effective treatments for Behcet’s disease.

The fourth goal: quality education, by providing the University with qualitative research that contributes to the development of the academic and research side.

The ninth goal: industry, innovation and infrastructure, through the adoption of modern technologies such as HPLC and the study of gene expression.

Seventeenth goal: to establish partnerships to achieve the goals through scientific cooperation between multiple departments and colleges.

We wish our dear students continued success and success in their scientific and research career.
