Discussion of the doctoral thesis in the Department of Biology Sciences-College of Science / University of Mosul

On Monday, November 24, 2025, the doctoral thesis of student Rawaa Ahmed Khalaf Aswad from the microbiology branch was discussed at the Department of Biology sciences at the College of Science / University of Mosul, tagged:
“Determination of Bioactive Compounds Produced by Bacteria Isolated from Marl Clay”
This was in the presence of the head of the department and a number of college teachers.
The thesis dealt with the diagnosis of bacterial isolates obtained from Marl mud in Batma – Ain Zala area in Nineveh governorate, where samples were collected and bacteria were isolated and diagnosed using culture methods and modern molecular techniques. The results resulted in the registration of 53 new bacterial isolates in the global database NCBI.
The study showed that Marl mud is a rich and unexploited environment that can provide microbial isolates with promising biological capabilities. The selected isolates also demonstrated their ability to produce enzymes that decompose a number of environmental pollutants such as keratin, chitin and cellulose, as well as the production of enzymes involved in industrial and medical applications and in the field of biofuel production.
A group of pharmacologically important secondary metabolites was identified using GC–Mass Photo Spectrometry, in addition to documenting the phenotypic diversity of isolates and the ability of some of them to produce important biopigments.
