Master’s thesis at the College of Science examines the role of Lysyl Oxidase enzyme in glaucoma patients

On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, the master’s thesis of the student Abdullah Najm Abdullah Hussein was discussed at the Department of Chemistry at the College of Science – University of Mosul, and the tagged:
Isolation and Evaluation of the Level of Lysyl Oxidase and Some Biochemical Parameters in People with Glaucoma
The study examined the measurement of LOXL-4 enzyme levels and twelve biochemical variables in the serum of glaucoma patients, including antioxidants (albumin, GPx, GSH, vitamin C, ceroplasmin), vitamin D, mineral elements (copper, zinc), in addition to indicators of oxidative stress and inflammation such as MDA, SIRT3, TNF-α, LOP.
The sample included 90 sick and healthy participants aged 50-83 years, studying the influence of age, gender and smoking on the measured values.
Major results
- A significant increase in LOXL-4 enzyme levels in glaucoma patients compared to healthy ones, and to a higher degree in males
- A pronounced decrease in antioxidants, vitamin D levels and mineral elements
- Increased indicators of oxidative stress and inflammation (MDA, TNF-α and lop)
- A pronounced influence of sex on the majority of laboratory indicators
- The absence of a significant effect of smoking on the averages of chemobiotic variables with a relative high in affected smokers
The practical side of the study
The second part of the research included:
- Isolation and purification of protein from the serum of patients using precipitation with ammonium sulfate (65-70%)
- Membrane screening (Dialysis)
- Determination of the molecular weight of the protein by electrophoresis technique, reaching 66 KDA
Discussion Committee

Under the supervision of: Assistant Prof. Dr. Mohamed Bahri Hassan
At the end of the discussion, she introduced the rapporteur of the Department of Chemistry A.M.Dr. Basma Ahmed Abdul Hadi wrote a letter of thanks and appreciation to Prof. Dr. Salem Jassim Khalaf Abdul from the Faculty of Medicine – Tikrit University, on behalf of the dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Hiam Adel Ibrahim, in appreciation of his efforts and scientific participation.
We wish our dear students success and success all the time.
