Master thesis discusses the inhibition of antibiotic resistance mechanisms in bacteria isolated from skin infections

The Department of Biology sciences at the College of science at the University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis tagged “inhibition of antibiotic resistance mechanisms in bacteria isolated from skin infections” on Monday, December 1, 2025, in the presence of the dean of the College of science, prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim al-Taie, and a group of faculty teachers.
The thesis presented by the student Qasim Ibrahim Abdi from the microbiology branch dealt with a scientific study aimed at evaluating the role of a group of natural substances in inhibiting the bacteria causing skin injuries, reducing their resistance to antibiotics, in order to reach safe and effective therapeutic alternatives that contribute to reducing the escalation of the problem of antibiotic resistance.
The study also included isolating and diagnosing the bacterial species prevalent in skin infections in Nineveh Governorate, identifying models of their resistance to antibiotics, and revealing the mechanisms of resistance possessed by these isolates, such as:
Beta-lactamase enzymes،
Flow pumps،
Factors associated with plasmids.
Then, the inhibitory effectiveness of a number of natural substances was tested, including: honey, aquatic and alcoholic plant extracts, essential vegetable oils, and fig milk, in an attempt to determine their ability to disrupt resistance mechanisms and study the possibility of therapeutic synergy between them and antibiotics when dealing with resistant strains.
The discussion Committee was chaired by Dr. Basma Ahmed Abdullah, with the membership of assistant prof. Dr. Inas Abdel Moneim Hussein, Lecture Dr. Sahar Luqman Hamed, and under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Mohsen Ayoub Issa.
The dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Prof. Dr. Basma Ahmed Abdullah/Al-Qabas college for her participation in the membership of the student discussion Committee.
Our wishes to our dear students to continue their scientific excellence and move forward in serving the academic career.
