Master thesis discusses the preparation and diagnosis of a number of complexes of bivalent elements

On Thursday, December 4, 2025, the Department of Chemistry at the College of Science / University of Mosul discussed the master’s thesis of the student Istabraq Adnan Yousef Abbas, tagged ” preparation and diagnosis of a number of complexes of bivalent elements derived from the lycands of Schiff bases and assessment of their bacterial effectiveness ” in the presence of the dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hiyam Adel Ibrahim, head of the Department, Assistant Prof. Dr. Firas Ahmed, and a number of department teachers.

The thesis dealt with the preparation and diagnosis of a group of bivalent transition element complexes derived from Schiff base ligands, with the study of their structural and physical properties and supporting their results with theoretical analysis (DFT) and molecular bonding (Docking), in order to identify their biological and applied possibilities.

The study also witnessed the preparation of twenty metal complexes using salts of the elements manganese(II), cobalt(II), nickel(II), Copper(II), and kharain(II), through the reaction of metal chlorides with four previously prepared lycands via hydrazone reactions. Spectroscopic and physical examinations confirmed that the complexes are all hexahedral, octahedral and non-electrolytic, and the lycands are bilaterally symmetrical (NO).

The results of the theoretical analysis showed the structural stability of a number of lycands and their complexes, while studies of the molecular binding of lycandines II and IV showed a good interaction ability with two bacterial enzymes (1JIK and 3G75), which indicates future bio-applicability.

In the applied aspect, the bacterial activity of the prepared lycands and a number of their complexes against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was evaluated using the diffusion method, the compounds showed inhibitory efficacy to varying degrees.

The discussion Committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Farah Tariq Saeed Mohammed, and the membership of both assistant professor Dr. Alia Sabah Mohammed Omar and teacher Dr. Asim Salman Abdullah, under the supervision of Professor Dr. sohba Ali Ahmed.

We wish our professors and students success and scientific brilliance.
