Scientific workshop on the role of fungi and their products in supporting sustainable development

As part of the continuing education activities at the Department of Biology Sciences / College of Science / University of Mosul, on Tuesday morning, December 9, 2025, at ten o’clock, a scientific workshop entitled ” fungi and their products… natural resources towards sustainable development ” was held in Hall 1B inside the Department.

Workshop content
The workshop addressed the vital role of fungi as a basic natural wealth that supports the concept of sustainable development through their role in the decomposition and recycling of nutrients, as well as their importance in the Pharmaceutical Industries and the production of vitamins and organic acids. They also discussed the industrial and economic applications of fungi, including their use in food as mushrooms, in the production of environmentally friendly alternatives to leather and textiles, in addition to their use in biological control, pollution treatment and soil improvement.
The workshop also touched upon cystic and basidiomycetes, explaining their morphological characteristics, types and bioactive compounds, and their importance in the fields of nutrition, health and cosmetology, especially in Functional Foods, health supplements and skin care preparations due to their anti-aging, soothing and moisturizing properties.
