Overview of the Department

Department of Chemistry – Overview

The Department of Chemistry was established in 1963 and is the oldest department in the College of Science. The first batch of graduates completed their studies in the academic year 1966-1967. Since its inception, the department has been active in scientific research, publishing numerous papers in scientific journals. However, this activity became more focused and developed with the introduction of graduate studies. The Master’s program was introduced in 1967-1968, and the Ph.D. program was established in 1985-1986, marking a significant scientific advancement.

Under the leadership of the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Hayam Al-Taie, and the respected College Council, evening studies were introduced in the 2022-2023 academic year, attracting the first cohort of students, which was a remarkable success. The number of students increased significantly in the 2023-2024 academic year, reaching 120 students.

The department includes six specializations: Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Industrial Chemistry. It has developed advanced research projects in these fields, many of which are closely related to medical, pharmaceutical, industrial, and petroleum materials that are essential for our country’s current needs. Over 1,500 research papers have been published locally, regionally, and internationally, along with numerous patents in various branches of chemistry, addressing issues of concern to Iraqi society.

The department’s faculty members are dedicated to enhancing both undergraduate and graduate studies to provide society with qualified graduates holding Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. degrees in various fields of chemistry. These graduates are prepared to work as researchers and educators in scientific research and education, contributing to the advancement of chemistry and solving scientific problems that support national development plans.

The department is currently undergoing a great revival in various fields, aiming to achieve a prominent position among chemistry departments in Iraq and become a leading department in education and scientific research.
