Overview of the Department of Earth Sciences

The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the foundational scientific departments of the College of Science, established in the mid-20th century. It has provided all state institutions, without exception, with leading scientific competencies in its field, contributing to the economic advancement of our beloved country, particularly in the areas of oil exploration, mining, raw materials, and water resources for investment in building a strong economy.

The Department of Earth Sciences was established at the University of Mosul in 1964, with 12 students enrolled initially. The program began in English, with faculty members from European, American, Indian, and Pakistani nationalities, specializing in various geological disciplines. The number of students applying to the department increased, reaching 120 students by 1974. After 1970, Iraqi staff returned to the department after completing their studies abroad. In 1975, the Master’s program was introduced, followed by the Ph.D. program in 1989. Hundreds of research projects have been completed in the department, and numerous patents have been registered.

The number of graduate students (Master’s and Ph.D.) has reached nearly 400 to date.
