Overview of the College of Science

The College of Science was established in 1963, initially comprising the Departments of Chemistry and Mathematics. In 1964, the Departments of Biology, Physics, and Earth Sciences were introduced, followed by the Department of Computer Science in 1983.

Since its inception, the College has contributed specialized graduates to society in the fields of Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Physics, Earth Sciences, and Computer Science.

Graduate studies commenced in 1968 with the Master’s programs in Chemistry and Biology, followed by Physics in 1972, Earth Sciences and Mathematics in 1974, and Computer Science in 1989. The first doctoral degree was awarded by the College in 1978 in Chemistry, while the Biology Department began offering doctoral degrees in 1989. By 1991, all departments of the College had doctoral programs.

In 1999, the Departments of Mathematics and Computer Science were separated to form an independent college. More recently, the College added two new departments: Biophysics and Renewable Energies.

Currently, the College of Science offers Bachelor’s degrees in six major disciplines: Chemistry, Biology (with specializations in Biology and Microbiology), Physics, Earth Sciences, Biophysics, and Renewable Energies.

Evening studies were reinstated in the academic year 2021-2022 in the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, and Earth Sciences. Additionally, the Ministry approved the transition of the Biophysics Department into the Medical Physics Department starting from the academic year 2022-2023, including the initiation of evening studies, making it the first of its kind in the universities of Nineveh Governorate.

As of now, the College of Science has graduated 16,804 undergraduate students, over 880 Master’s degree holders, and 153 Ph.D. holders. The College is also a member of the Scientific Union of Faculties of Science under the umbrella of the Association of Arab Universities.
