Department of Biology – Overview
The Department of Biology at the University of Mosul was established in 1964. Biology, a branch of modern natural sciences, is a vast field of human knowledge and serves as the foundation for all sciences that study life and its various phenomena. It is also the cornerstone of modern health sciences, as it uncovers the biological processes that occur in living organisms, helping in the diagnosis of diseases. Consequently, biology has gained significant importance among the sciences and has extended into fields such as health, agriculture, food industries, laboratory analyses, and environmental treatments.
The Department of Biology has adopted a solid academic program that aligns with international standards, focusing on both theoretical and practical aspects of biological sciences. The curriculum is constantly updated. The university study duration in the department is four years, starting with first-year students who are admitted based on their high school grades, culminating in graduation when students earn a Bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences.
Master’s studies in the Department of Biology began in 1968, and doctoral studies commenced in 1989.
Recognizing the role of the university in preparing specialized personnel in the field of life sciences, and aiming to achieve the highest levels of knowledge and elevate both individuals and society, the department’s vision is aligned with the mission and goals of the College of Science. It serves the Iraqi community by continuously interacting with advancements in the field of knowledge, maintaining a focus on dedicated minds that are tireless in transferring ideas from academic fields to applied areas, and addressing the challenges facing our beloved country.
