Nature as a Source of Unity and Hope: An Ecocritical Analysis of Selected Contemporary Plays

The Department of English Language at the College of Arts held a Master’s thesis defense on “Nature Unites and Grants Hope: An Ecocritical Study of Bovell’s When the Rain Stops Falling, Butterworth’s The River, and Jenkins’ Appropriate.”

The defense took place on Sunday, October 26, 2025. A portion of the session was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahad Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Salih Abdullah Abdulrahman, and several members of the College’s academic staff.

Study Objective

The research, submitted by the student Saba Khalil Mohammed Mustafa, aimed to investigate the role and influence of nature on humanity as depicted in the selected dramatic works. Specifically, the study sought to demonstrate how the natural world functions as a source of unity and hope, and concurrently, to explore the human responsibility toward environmental conservation.
