The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Media and Journalism at the University of Mosul is a four-year, full-time undergraduate program comprising 240 ECTS credits, fully aligned with the European Bologna Process framework. The program provides students with a rigorous academic and practical foundation in communication theory, media ethics, information verification, and media law, followed by specialized study across core journalistic disciplines: print journalism, broadcast University of Mosul | Department of Media & Journalism (television and radio), digital & multimedia reporting, data journalism, public relations, and strategic communication.
The curriculum seamlessly integrates theoretical knowledge with hands-on newsroom practice, digital media production, field reporting, investigative methods, media analytics, and capstone research projects. Graduates develop strong critical thinking, investigation, narrative storytelling, multimedia editing, and cross-platform publishing competencies required to operate in high-speed, modern newsroom environments and modern digital communication ecosystems. Furthermore, the program prepares graduates for ethical media leadership, digital innovation, lifelong learning, and advanced graduate study while reinforcing social responsibility, objectivity, and community empowerment.

The Media Program aims to:

1: Provide students with a comprehensive media education that establishes a strong foundation in communication sciences, news reporting, and critical thinking needed to navigate modern media platforms.
2: Prepare graduates for successful careers and postgraduate studies by enhancing their knowledge and ability to produce and manage media content in accordance with professional and ethical standards.
3: Develop students’ practical and technical competencies through hands-on studio training, field practice, and the application of modern digital software for producing and editing audio and visual content.
4: Enhance graduates’ communication, leadership, and teamwork skills, enabling them to efficiently manage media campaigns and press institutions.
5: Promote scientific research, digital innovation, and media literacy, while meeting the demands of the local and international media job markets.
6: Professional & Ethical Qualification :Preparing graduates to compete in the job market or pursue postgraduate studies and Building the capacity to produce and manage media content with high efficiency. Ensuring full commitment to ethical standards, the journalistic code of ethics, and social responsibility.

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, graduates are awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Media from the University of Mosul.

The program is classified at Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF), in accordance with the instructions and regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

 

Admissions are subject to the Central Admission terms and regulations issued by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the University of Mosul regarding colleges and departments of Media in Iraq.

To obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Media, students must successfully fulfill the following requirements:

1:Successfully complete all 240 ECTS credits, including all mandatory and elective courses.
2:Achieve the minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) required for graduation.
3:Complete all practical training requirements, including studio work, field reporting, and summer internship training.
4:Comply with all academic rules and regulations issued by the Ministry and the University.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and the transfer of academic credits are considered strictly in cases of student transfers or course equivalencies, in accordance with applicable ministerial and university regulations.

Upon graduation, students receiving the degree in Media and Journalism will demonstrate:

1: GO1 (Knowledge & News Formulation): Ability to gather, analyze, verify, and synthesize information from primary and secondary sources to produce clear, objective, and accurate news stories across print, broadcast, and digital platforms.
2: GO2 (Media Design & Digital Production): Ability to create, design, and produce engaging multimedia content – including text, audio, video, graphics, and interactive elements- tailored for diverse audiences and contemporary digital platforms.
3: GO3 (Research, Verification & Analytics): Ability to apply investigative methodologies, fact-checking techniques, audience analytics tools, and qualitative/quantitative research to make sound editorial judgments and draw evidence-based conclusions.
4: GO4 (Effective Public & Strategic Communication): Ability to communicate eloquently, persuasive, and transparently with varied public audiences, community stakeholders, and specialized professional groups.
5: GO5 (Ethical Standards & Media Law): Ability to recognize and adhere to media codes of conduct, copyright standards, privacy laws, and freedom of expression guidelines, acting with ethical integrity in public communication.
6: GO6 (Continuous Self-Development & Digital Adaptability): Ability to evaluate emerging media technologies, adapt to evolving digital communication paradigms, and engage in lifelong professional development.
7: GO7 (Newsroom Management & Collaborative Teamwork): Ability to function effectively within cross-functional editorial teams, manage project deadlines, handle high-pressure newsroom schedules, and manage editorial risk.

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Media and Journalism program is aligned with the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF) at Level 6. Assessment policies strictly comply with MOHESR and University of Mosul Bologna Process guidelines. Student evaluation employs balanced continuous and summative assessment tools:

1: Continuous Assessment (40% – 50%): Newsroom assignments, field reports, media production exercises, quizzes, and class participation.
2: Midterm Evaluations & Studio Practical Exams: Mid-semester examinations evaluating broadcast techniques, editing software, and theoretical knowledge.
3: Final Written & Practical Examinations (50% – 60%): Comprehensive written tests and live newsroom/studio practical production assessments.
4: Graduation Capstone Project Assessment: Independent investigative reporting or multimedia project evaluated by an expert academic and industry panel.
5: Academic Integrity: Zero-tolerance policies regarding plagiarism, fabrication of sources, defamation, or ethical violations as per university regulations.

To be awarded the Bachelor’s degree, students must fulfill the following mandatory requirements:

1: Successful completion of all 240 ECTS credits spread across eight academic semesters.
2: Achievement of the required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) established by university guidelines.
3: Satisfactory completion of the compulsory summer media internship / newsroom placement.
4: Successful submission and public defense of the final Graduation Capstone Media Project.
5: Fulfillment of all administrative, financial, and institutional clearance procedures.

The Program Coordinator oversees the academic implementation, continuous curriculum enhancement, and quality assurance of the program. Responsibilities include ensuring strict adherence to Bologna Process ECTS rules, monitoring Graduate Outcome achievements, coordinating faculty assignments across print, digital, and broadcast tracks, supervising media lab and studio facilities, managing summer internships, and leading accreditation alignment with MOHESR guidelines. The coordinator also facilitates industry partnerships with regional news media outlets to guarantee curriculum relevance in a rapidly transforming digital landscape.
