Higher Diploma Thesis Defense at the College of Arts: Voter Apathy in Local Elections and its Societal Implications

The Department of Sociology at the College of Arts successfully defended a Higher Diploma dissertation titled “Voter Apathy in Local Council Elections and its Reflection on Societal Peace” on Monday, May 27, 2025. The defense was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahad Al-Taie, the Head of the Department, Professor Dr. Firas Abbas Fadhel, and several faculty members from the college. Mr. Mohammed Abdullah Al-Jubouri, Deputy Head of the Nineveh Provincial Council, was also present.
The study, submitted by student Mohammed Akram Mohammed from the Department of Sociology, addressed the phenomenon of voter abstention in Mosul city from participating in local council elections and the weakened exercise of this democratic right.
This research aims to shed light on the prominent reasons behind voter apathy in local council elections and the subsequent impact on societal peace.
