On Monday, July 7, 2025, the Department of English Language at the College of Arts discussed a Master’s thesis titled “Reforming Utopic Afrofuturism: A Study of Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad, Tade Thompson’s Rosewater, and Maurice Carlos Ruffin’s We Cast a Shadow.” The session was attended by Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, Dean of the College, and several faculty members.

The study, submitted by student Othman Nabil Abdul Razzaq in the Department of English Language, explored the direction of Black resistance against white dominance in their societies, employing the theory of Afrofuturism as a tool to empower Black individuals.

The thesis aimed to reconstruct Black identity by applying the concept of “anti-Blackness” as reflected in the novels of African authors through the lens of Afrofuturism theory.
