Master’s Thesis Defense: “Examining the Syntactic and Pragmatic Aspects of Adverbial Clauses in Selected Modern Novels”

On Sunday, July 20, 2025, the English Language Department at the College of Arts held a master’s thesis defense for a study titled “Examining the Syntactic and Pragmatic Aspects of Adverbial Clauses in Some Selected Modern Novels.” The defense was attended by Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, Dean of the College, Dr. Salih Abdullah Abdulrahman, Head of the Department, and several faculty members.

The study, presented by student Mahmoud Fakhreddin Hadi, delves into the syntactic and pragmatic aspects of adverbial clauses in a purposefully selected collection of modern English novels: The Girl on the Train, Room, and The Goldfinch.

The thesis aimed to understand the structural and pragmatic roles of adverbial clauses within modern literary texts by analyzing their syntactic behavior and pragmatic functions.
