Master’s Thesis on “Politeness Strategies in Arabic Football Commentaries with Reference to English”

The English Department at the College of Arts discussed a master’s thesis titled “Politeness Strategies in Arabic Football Commentaries with Reference to English” on Sunday, August 17, 2025, in the discussion hall at the College of Islamic Sciences. The Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Salih Abdullah Abdul-Rahman, and a number of faculty members attended a part of the discussion.
The study, presented by the student Abdul-Jabbar Khalaf Hussein, provided an in-depth pragmatic analysis of politeness strategies in Arabic football commentary, with a reference to English. The thesis focused on a discourse analysis of Arab commentators during live football matches, specifically “El Clásico” and “the Derby” games, to reveal the linguistic patterns used by commentators to maintain a relationship with the audience and avoid offense.
This thesis aims to clarify how Arab commentators employ different politeness strategies during sports commentary and to identify the pragmatic purposes for using each strategy in specific contexts.
