The Department of History at the College of Arts recently held a doctoral dissertation defense titled “The Political and Civilizational Roles of Hanafi Scholars in Baghdad During the Abbasid Era (248-656 AH / 862-1258 AD).” The defense took place on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, and was attended by Dr. Mahmoud Saleh Saeed, Head of the Department, along with several faculty members.
The dissertation, submitted by student Bahaa Ahmed Mohammed Al-Jubouri from the Department of History, explored the political and civilizational roles of Hanafi scholars in Baghdad. It aimed to uncover the contributions these scholars made to the intellectual, political, and social spheres during the Abbasid Caliphate. The study highlighted their close ties to state administrative and judicial institutions and their role in solidifying political structures.
The study’s primary objective was to shed light on a crucial aspect of Baghdad’s political and civilizational history, namely the role of Hanafi scholars. Their influence wasn’t limited to jurisprudence and the judiciary; it also extended to managing state affairs and participating in political decision-making. The research also underscored their significant civilizational and intellectual contributions, which helped establish Baghdad’s prominence as a capital of knowledge and culture.
