Doctoral Dissertation Defense: Environmental Culture and Local Community Development

The Department of Sociology at the College of Arts successfully defended a doctoral dissertation titled: “Environmental Culture and its Role in Local Community Development: A Field Study in Al-Hawija District.”
The defense took place on Sunday, September 28, 2025. The session was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Hatem Fahd Al-Tai, the Head of the Department, Dr. Firas Abbas Fadil, and a number of the College’s faculty members.
The research, submitted by candidate Wisam Salih Sultan Abdullah within the Sociology Department, systematically investigated environmental culture and its vital function in the development of the local community. The study specifically explored the extent of individuals’ awareness of environmental issues within the Al-Hawija District and sought to determine how this awareness could be leveraged to promote positive behaviors that contribute to environmental protection and the achievement of sustainable development at the local level.
The study’s principal objective is to illuminate the issue of the environment, which stands as one of the most pressing contemporary concerns and a distinct dimension of comprehensive development. Furthermore, it emphasizes the environment’s role as the fundamental source of essential needs required for the continued existence of humanity on Earth.
