The College of Environmental Sciences discusses a master’s thesis on geoenvironmental assessment and health risks of heavy metals.

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Dr. Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and in the presence of the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Taie, the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, and the Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences, the master’s thesis defense, entitled “Geoenvironmental Assessment and Health Risks of Heavy Elements in the Surface Soil of Mosul City,” was held this morning, Monday, September 1, 2025, in the discussion hall of our college.
The defense committee was chaired by the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Forestry, Professor Dr. Ali Farouk Al-Maadidi, and included Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul Sattar Jabir Zaben and Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Walid Saeed, under the supervision and membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Hazem Jumaa Mahmoud.
The study aimed to determine the total content of heavy elements in the surface soil of the left side of Mosul. It also aimed to determine the geochemical distribution of some heavy elements in soil components, assess their mobility and bioavailability, identify the sources of soil contamination with heavy elements in the study area, and assess the environmental and health risks resulting from this contamination. The study achieved five Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).
At the conclusion of the discussion, the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Taie, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Professor Dr. Ali Farouk Al-Maadidi, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Mosul, in recognition of his distinguished scientific efforts and constructive contributions.
