The College of Environmental Sciences discusses a master’s thesis on improving groundwater quality in agricultural areas.

Under the patronage of the President of the University of Mosul, Professor Wahid Mahmoud Al-Ibrahimi, and with the supervision of the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Professor Muthanna Jassim Al-Taie, and in the presence of the Dean’s Assistants for Scientific and Administrative Affairs, the Master’s thesis discussion in the Department of Environmental Sciences, entitled “A Study of Improving Groundwater Quality in Agricultural Areas Using Sustainable Methods and Its Impact on Food Security,” was held this morning, Thursday, September 11, 2025, in the discussion hall of the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering.

The discussion committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Yusra Majeed Shihab Al-Shaker, with membership from Assistant Professor Abdul-Moneim Muhammad Ali and Assistant Professor Suhair Munir Daoud, and under the supervision and membership of Assistant Professor Taha Ahmed Taha and Assistant Professor Ansam Ahmed Saadoun.

This study aimed to identify several wells in agricultural areas south of Mosul, assess their water quality and suitability for agricultural use, manufacture devices to increase oxygen concentration in selected groundwater, assess the quality of groundwater after aeration, and study the extent of improvement. The study also recommended the suitability of the resulting aeration water for irrigating agricultural crops.

The study recommended:

Studying the concentrations of various heavy metals in well water and their response to the aeration process.

Increasing the aeration period to six hours and then doubling it to assess qualitative changes in water quality and determine the optimal time for aeration and its relationship to water quality.

Using additional sustainable methods to improve water quality, such as local sand filters.

The study also achieved five Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).

At the end of the discussion, the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Taie, presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Assistant Professor Dr. Abdul-Moneim Muhammad Ali, University of Mosul / College of Science, in appreciation of his valuable comments and scientific guidance.
