A scientific visit for second-year students / Department of Climate Change to the Dryland and Conservation Agriculture Research Center

As part of its field research activities, the Climate Change Department at the College of Environmental Sciences organized a scientific visit to the Dryland and Conservation Agriculture Research Center for second-year students, supervised by several faculty members, as part of the requirements for the Sustainable Agriculture course.
The visit aimed to introduce students to the concept of conservation agriculture and its importance in achieving sustainable agricultural development, as well as to familiarize them with the differences between conservation agriculture and conventional agriculture in terms of practices and environmental impact. It was explained that conservation agriculture relies on minimizing soil tillage, utilizing permanent vegetation cover, and implementing crop rotation to maintain soil fertility and reduce erosion. It also focuses on conserving water and reducing carbon emissions from agricultural operations, making it more compatible with the requirements of addressing climate change.
Conventional agriculture, on the other hand, often relies on intensive tillage and the use of large quantities of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, leading to soil degradation, loss of biodiversity, and increased greenhouse gas emissions.
The visit included field trips to the center’s laboratories and research units, where students learned about modern irrigation systems, drought-resistant crop technologies, and methods for improving soil using environmental techniques. They also received a detailed explanation from the center’s researchers about the applied projects being implemented in the field of conservation agriculture and their role in supporting national food security.
At the end of the visit, the students and faculty members expressed their gratitude to the center’s administration for their warm welcome and excellent cooperation, emphasizing that such scientific visits contribute to a deeper practical understanding of environmental concepts and bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications that serve the sustainability of natural resources.
