A faculty member from the College of Environmental Sciences participated in a doctoral dissertation discussion committee on the isolation and identification of certain microorganisms from contaminated environments.

Professor Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Khalil, a faculty member at the College of Environmental Sciences, participated in the doctoral dissertation defense committee for the dissertation entitled:
“Isolation and Identification of Some Microorganisms from Polluted Environments and Their Application in Treating Organic Pollution.” The defense took place in the Department of Life Sciences, College of Education for Women, Tikrit University, on Thursday, November 20, 2025. The dissertation was presented by researcher Nada Wasmi Shihab.
The committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Waleed Mohammed Sheet, with members Professor Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Khalil, Professor Dr. Abdul Ahmed Hassan, Assistant Professor Dr. Maryam Adnan Ibrahim, Assistant Professor Dr. Salma Khalid Yassin, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Muayyad Sultan. Professor Dr. Ali Saleh Hussein served as the supervisor and committee member. This study aimed to diagnose the physical and chemical properties of soils and waters contaminated with petroleum-based organic matter, isolate microorganisms (bacteria, filamentous bacteria, and fungi) from these polluted environments, and identify the microorganisms using morphological and chemical methods, both manually and with the VITEK instrument.
In addition, molecular diagnostics were employed both locally and internationally to accurately identify the species. The study also highlighted pollution in the Al-Shirqat and Al-Qayyarah regions, revealing high levels of petroleum derivatives that negatively impacted soil and water characteristics, such as increased salinity, elevated organic matter content, and a decline in their quality. The study indicated that poor management of industrial and agricultural waste contributed to the exacerbation of pollution.
This participation comes within the framework of scientific and academic cooperation and the promotion of scientific research in related environmental fields. This study achieved five Sustainable Development Goals: Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 15 (Life on Land).
