A seminar in the Climate Change Department on the dangerous effects of nitrates resulting from the addition of chemical fertilizers.

Under the supervision of the Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Muthanna Jassim Al-Tai, and with the follow-up of the Head of the Climate Change Department, Dr. Ali Zain Al-Abidin Haider, a seminar entitled “The Impact of Excessive Use of Chemical Fertilizers on Nitrate Water Pollution” was held in the Climate Change Department. The seminar was presented by Mr. Ahmed Ismail Suleiman Al-Khafaf, a faculty member in the Climate Change Department at our college.
The seminar addressed the impact of excessive use of chemical fertilizers, particularly nitrogen fertilizers, on nitrate water pollution. It focused on the mechanisms by which nitrates are transferred to water sources through leaching, seepage, and surface runoff, leading to increased concentrations in groundwater and surface water. The seminar also reviewed the most significant environmental and health consequences, including eutrophication and the degradation of aquatic life, in addition to the health risks to humans from consuming nitrate-contaminated water.
The seminar concluded by emphasizing the need to adopt sustainable agricultural practices, rationalize the use of chemical fertilizers, encourage organic alternatives, implement regular water quality monitoring programs, and establish clear guidelines for soil nutrient management.
