Department of Climate Change\ About the Department
The Department of Climate Change at the University of Mosul represents a qualitative leap in Iraq’s academic and research journey. Established in the academic year 2024-2025, it is the first specialized department in climate sciences and climate change across all Iraqi universities, reflecting the growing concern over the environmental and climatic challenges facing the country. The department welcomed its first cohort of 54 male and female students, selected through competitive criteria.
The department council consists of seven members with distinguished academic and scientific expertise, including a department head, a secretary, and five faculty members holding advanced degrees (Ph.D.) in related fields such as environmental sciences, geology, and atmospheric physics. This ensures a diverse knowledge base that aligns with the department’s objectives.
The department’s curriculum focuses on both theoretical and applied aspects of climate sciences, including the study of climate change impacts on water resources, agriculture, and biodiversity, as well as assessing environmental policies and strategies for adapting to climate challenges. It also aims to advance scientific research through collaborative studies with local and international institutions, as well as organizing seminars and workshops to raise public awareness about climate change issues.
The establishment of this department responds to the urgent need to keep pace with global environmental changes. It serves as a scientific resource to help develop national strategies for mitigating the effects of climate change and promoting sustainable development in Iraq. As for the study system, the bachelor’s program in the department follows the Bologna Process.
