In the presence of the Assistant Dean for Administrative and Financial Affairs of the College of Nursing, Dr. Rayan Ibrahim Khalil, and the Dean of the College of Nursing at the University of Nineveh, Professor Dr. Radwan Hussein Ibrahim, the master’s thesis defense of the student Shahd Hazem Ali was held on the morning of Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The thesis is entitled: “Nurses’ Knowledge, Cultural Attitudes, and Intentions Toward Cervical Cancer Prevention (Utilizing the Theory of Reasoned Action).”

The study aimed to assess the level of nurses’ knowledge about cervical cancer and its prevention methods, analyze their cultural and social attitudes toward early screening, and explore their future intentions to adopt preventive behaviors based on the Theory of Reasoned Action. It also sought to identify the factors that influence nurses’ readiness to implement preventive practices in the workplace.

The results of the study showed that while most nurses had general knowledge about cervical cancer, there was a variation in the depth of their specialized understanding. The study also revealed that cultural, social, and religious beliefs directly influence the adoption of preventive measures, and that behavioral intentions are significantly affected by personal convictions and social support. Furthermore, the study demonstrated that enhancing cultural awareness and providing scientifically-based health education could improve nurses’ engagement with prevention programs. It recommended the inclusion of cancer prevention concepts in nursing curricula and continuous professional training.

The defense committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Suhaila Mohammed Ali from the College of Nursing / University of Kirkuk, and included as members: Assistant Professor Dr. Hanaa Hussein Makhlif and Assistant Professor Dr. Saja Abdul-Bari Abduljawad from the College of Medicine / University of Mosul, and Professor Dr. Salwa Hazem Al-Mukhtar from the College of Nursing / University of Mosul, who also served as the academic supervisor and played a key role in guiding and overseeing all stages of the thesis preparation.

The session witnessed an in-depth scientific discussion in which committee members exchanged academic insights and constructive comments that contributed to enhancing the quality and scientific value of the thesis. At the conclusion of the defense, the committee decided to award the student Shahd Hazem Ali a Master’s degree in Nursing Sciences after implementing the recommended revisions.
