Geodiversity in the Field

On the occasion of International Geodiversity Day, the Department of Mining Engineering at the College of Petroleum and Mining Engineering organized a field tour within the university campus, with the participation of a group of third-year students from the Department of Mining Engineering.
The field tour aimed to introduce students firsthand to the importance of fluvial sediments and river terraces found in the area, explain their geological characteristics and their impact on university buildings and structures, and identify the rock materials and minerals contained within these deposits and their geological and engineering significance.
The tour was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Ezz Al-Din Saleh Al-Jawadi, Assistant Lecturer Dr. Nihad Saud Najm, Assistant Lecturer Dr. Iman Qasim Yahya, and Assistant Lecturer Dr. Rahma Sael Abd. They provided the students with field-based explanations of the geological phenomena and formations observed during the tour and linked them to the theoretical concepts covered in their studies.
This field tour is part of the scientific and field activities of the Department of Mining Engineering, which aim to strengthen students’ practical knowledge, enhance their understanding of geodiversity and the local environment, and highlight the importance of geological studies in engineering and development fields.
