Regional Studies Center Announces Publication of a New Book on Second Gulf War

Regional Studies Center has announced the publication of a new scholarly book titled “The Known and the Unknown in the Crisis and the Second Gulf War 1990–1991.” The book is authored by the Center’s researchers, Assist. Lect. Munjid Mohammad Fawzi Al-Ghuraier and Assist. Prof. Dr. Abdul Razzaq Khalaf Mohammad. It has been published by Mashki for Printing, Publishing, and Distribution and carries the International Standard Book Number (ISBN: 9789922764757), adding to the Center’s contributions in the field of historical and political studies with a strategic dimension.

The book examines one of the most pivotal moments in the history of Iraq and the region, beginning with the events of August 2, 1990, passing through the unfolding crisis, and culminating in the military operations led by the international coalition. The authors offer an in-depth analytical reading that goes beyond conventional narrative, deconstructing the strategic ambiguity that surrounded that period and exploring the interplay between the “known” and the “unknown” within the context of international and regional decision-making.

Within the framework of linking academic output to the Sustainable Development Goals, the Center emphasizes that this publication contributes to several key objectives. Notably, it supports Goal 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by analyzing the causes and consequences of international conflicts, thereby enhancing understanding of conflict prevention mechanisms and promoting stability. It also advances Goal 4 (Quality Education) by providing a rigorous academic resource for researchers and graduate students in the fields of history and international relations. Furthermore, it contributes to Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by encouraging collaborative research and fostering academic integration in the study of regional issues.

This publication comes as part of the Center’s ongoing efforts to consolidate its research role in analyzing strategic issues and to offer scholarly insights that enhance understanding of regional and international transformations, ultimately serving pathways toward stability and development in Iraq and the wider region.
