International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Slave Trade _ College of law

Based on the directives of the Presidency of the University of Mosul, represented by Prof. Dr. Qusay Kamal Al-Din Al-Ahmadi, President of the University of Mosul, and members of the University Council, the necessity of openness and interaction with the community and its various institutions. Represented by the Human Rights Law Branch, to shed light on the national and international days related to the life of the individual and society, and from these days the International Day of Remembrance for Victims of Slavery, which was approved by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution issued in December 2007, which was approved on the 23rd of August is an annual international day to celebrate the abolition of slavery, which the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO” was keen to commemorate, and to commemorate this day and the great achievement in abolishing the black slave trade

The numbers of people who have been brutally stripped of their identity, their families, their homes, their lands, their culture, and their voices can never be assured. However, more than 15 million men, women and children were kidnapped and forcibly taken to places thousands of miles away. Undoubtedly, millions of women, men, children and infants perished during their fateful journey and before they reached their destination. In return, millions survived and were sold – Especially on American soil – as a mere commodity destined for exploitation, abuse and exchange, and then they died under these terrible conditions

Today we honor the memory of the victims of the transatlantic slave trade, their stories and their struggle for freedom and equality, the legacy of their misery and their endurance. Human society will never again have this poisonous spectrum so that the greed of a handful of tyrants will never again cost many people so much so that baseless fanaticism will never again lead to chaining and suffocation or malicious prejudice to flogging and beatings or hideous hatred to mutilation and destruction

As we commemorate the day, let us remember today the enormous contributions of people of African descent around the world – especially in the context of the transatlantic slave trade – a great and inappreciable contribution to the world’s economies, cultures and societies. The International Decade for People of African Descent achieves this recognition, justice and development for People of African descent but this is highlighted in the context of continuing denial of rights due to barriers embodied in racism, ethnic discrimination, xenophobia and Afrophobia

Just as with the victims of slavery in the past, there is no treatment or rehabilitation for today’s victims – although it is a solemn obligation for states to take urgent and effective measures to reverse the effects of this toxic legacy and to eliminate racism and xenophobia and to take all Reasonable measures to ensure that the tragedies of slavery in all its forms are eliminated and there is no return

Hence, the College of Law / University of Mosul expresses that making efforts to eradicate slavery from its roots should adopt more than legal legislation and effective national political measures – it is worth transforming the socio-economic structure that allows these crimes to grow and spread
