Master’s thesis in the branch of human rights law on the international protection of holy religious places in Iraq during armed conflicts

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, the Human Rights Law Branch at the College of Law at the University of Mosul discussed a master’s thesis on the international protection of holy religious places in Iraq during armed conflicts, part of which was attended by Assistant Professor Dr.

The message submitted by the student, Roaa Muhannad Haseeb, in the Human Rights Law Branch, dealt with the holy religious places and their place among peoples because of the spiritual and ideological possessions they contain and the economic, political and cultural importance they bear. Therefore, the international community has taken care of protecting these holy places during the period of armed conflicts, whether they are of a nature International or not of an international character, as it obliges the parties to the conflict to abide by the rules for the protection of holy religious places

The study aims to show that although the 1954 Hague Convention added protection to religious holy places as one of the cultural properties, where this protection varied between public and private, in addition to the enhanced protection provided by the Second Additional Protocol of 1999 to the Hague Convention, but this protection was Insufficient and inadequate in view of the grave violations that the holy religious sites have been subjected to

The discussion committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Razzaq Hedham, the membership of the assistant professor was Dr. Ziad Abdel-Wahab Abdullah, the assistant professor was Dr. Hala Ahmed Mohamed, and the membership and supervision of the assistant professor was Dr. Shaima Abdel-Sattar Jabr
