Master’s thesis in the Public Law Department on the legality of artificial intelligence weapons in light of the provisions of international public law,,,
The Public Law Department at the College of Law at the University of Mosul discussed on Wednesday, December 4, 2024, a master’s thesis on the legality of artificial intelligence weapons in light of the provisions of international public law, attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Wissam Nemat Ibrahim Al-Saadi, Dean of the College, and a number of members of the College Council and its lecturers.
The thesis submitted by researcher Aya Mahjoub Balo in the Public Law Department addressed one of the most important aspects of modern technological development, represented by artificial intelligence weapons, which are completely different from the traditional weapons that humanity has known previously due to their unique characteristics that lead to the loss of human control and judgment, which raises new concerns from a legal and humanitarian point of view about the legality of developing and using artificial intelligence weapons in accordance with the provisions of international humanitarian law.
The message aims to demonstrate the lack of agreement of the international community on a unified concept of artificial intelligence weapons, as well as the lack of a unified international position on their development and use, and their difference from fully autonomous weapons, as artificial intelligence weapons are semi-autonomous weapons. The discussion committee was chaired by Assistant Professor Dr. Ziad Abdul Wahab Abdullah, and the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Yassin Maysar Aziz, Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Nazim Daoud, and the membership and supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Suhad Abdul Jamal Abdul Karim.
