Discussion of a master’s thesis on the effectiveness of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme in Iraq

On Thursday, September 11, 2025, the Master’s thesis of student Suad Khudair Muhammad, entitled:
“The Effectiveness of the United Nations Habitat Programme in Sustainable Human Settlements – Iraq as a Model,” was discussed at the College of Law at the University of Mosul. The thesis was attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Rafel Hassan Hamid, Administrative Assistant to the President of the University of Mosul, representing the university presidency. This gave the event great academic and administrative significance and emphasized the university administration’s support for sound scientific research that serves sustainable development issues locally and globally.

The discussion committee consisted of the following distinguished professors:

· Prof. Dr. Ahmed Tariq Yassin (Chair)
· Asst. Prof. Dr. Wissam Nemat Ibrahim (Member)
· Asst. Prof. Dr. Hala Ahmed Muhammad (Member)
· Prof. Dr. Mohammed Younis Al-Sayegh (Supervisor)

The thesis addressed the role of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through sustainable urban planning, seeking to build safe, inclusive cities capable of facing contemporary challenges such as rapid population growth, climate change, and economic and social crises, with a focus on the experience of Iraq as a case study.

The study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of the program, the success of its projects, the challenges it faced, and ways to enhance its future role to meet the requirements of sustainable urban development.

At the conclusion of the discussion, the student was awarded a master’s degree after an extensive scientific discussion in which the committee commended her efforts and the value of her research, which adds applied knowledge to the field of urban planning and sustainable development.
