International Anti-Corruption Day

Corruption undermines peace, security and development. It is a scourge no less dangerous than other scourges that have ravaged societies. It stands in the way of building a state, achieving justice, building peace, and providing democracy. Through the contribution of the international community to combat it, the United Nations has concluded its anti-corruption convention, which is the only binding global instrument. The Convention covers the following five main areas: preventive measures, criminalization and law enforcement, international cooperation, asset recovery, technical assistance and information exchange, in addition to covering it. There are many different forms of corruption, such as bribery, trading in influence, abuse of jobs, and various acts of corruption in the private sector. One of the most prominent features of the agreement is the inclusion of a special chapter on the recovery of assets with the aim of returning them to their rightful owners, including the countries from which they were taken illegally. The vast majority of Member states of the United Nations are parties to this agreement because of its effects on every aspect of society, as corruption is closely intertwined with conflicts and unrest, which threatens social and economic development and undermines the foundations of democratic institutions and the rule of law.
The celebration of International Anti-Corruption Day 2023 is intended to highlight the close connection between the fight against corruption, peace, security and development. The essence of that connection is the idea that confronting this crime is everyone’s right and responsibility, and that cooperation and participation enable people and institutions to overcome the negative impact of this crime. There is a role for states. For government officials, civil servants, law enforcement officials, representatives of the media and the private sector, civil society, academia, the general public and youth in particular in uniting the world against corruption.
