On Thursday, February 27, 2025, the Human Rights Law Department at the College of Law at the University of Mosul discussed a master’s thesis on the challenges of protecting civilians during contemporary armed conflicts, attended by Assistant Professor Dr. Wissam Nemat Ibrahim Al-Saadi, Dean of the College, and a number of members of the College Council and its lecturers.
The thesis submitted by the student Salem Saleh Jassim in the Human Rights Law Department dealt with contemporary armed conflicts that are the result of successive generational wars in their fifth generation and the weapons technologies used in them and the emergence of advanced methods and arts of combat within the scope of their hostile operations, which leads to more casualties among civilians, which affects the application of the principles of international humanitarian law such as the principles of distinction, proportionality and military necessity.
The thesis aims to demonstrate the insufficiency of the legal rules contained in international humanitarian law in covering accelerating events during contemporary armed conflicts and their repercussions on the protection of civilians.
The discussion committee was headed by Professor Dr. Ahmed Tariq Yassin, with the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Shaima Abdel Sattar Gabr, Lecturer Dr. Ahmed Faris Idris, and the membership and supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Suha Hamid Salim.
