A master’s thesis presented by “Wardi Mohammed Hassan, titled “The Potential Relationship Between the Severity of Endometritis in Cows and the Expression of Certain Pro-inflammatory Cytokines”

Master’s Thesis Defense at the College of Veterinary Medicine – Department of Surgery and Animal Reproduction

A master’s thesis titled “The Potential Relationship Between the Severity of Endometritis in Cows and the Expression of Certain Pro-inflammatory Cytokines” was defended by student Wardi Mohammed Hassan under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Essam Bhnan Basheer on Sunday, October 5, 2025.

The examination committee consisted of the following esteemed members:

  1. Asst. Prof. Dr. Bara Duraid Ibrahim (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Mosul) – Chair
  2. Asst. Prof. Dr. Firas Mohammed Abed (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Mosul) – Member
  3. Asst. Prof. Dr. Nawaf Nour Al-Din Dhahir (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Tikrit) – Member
  4. Asst. Prof. Dr. Essam Behnan Basheer (College of Veterinary Medicine – University of Mosul) – Member and Supervisor.

The study employed a diagnostic model integrating cytology and histopathology to assess the presence and severity of endometrial inflammation in slaughtered cows. It also utilized immunohistochemistry to determine the localization of specific interleukins within the endometrium. Inflammatory cell ratios in uterine smears were classified into three levels, while tissue sections were used to evaluate inflammation severity and its correlation with the localization of several pro-inflammatory interleukins and the extent of inflammatory cell infiltration.

The study concluded that the integrated protocol validated the reliability and diagnostic accuracy of the designed thresholds for classifying endometritis. Moreover, the varied distribution and expression intensity of interleukins were identified as specific biomarkers for the inflammatory phase of endometritis.

Following a confident and scientifically grounded defense, the thesis was accepted by the committee.

Congratulations to the researcher, the supervisor, the college, and the Department of Surgery and Animal Reproduction on this scientific achievement. Best wishes to the examination committee. This defense contributes to the realization of Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education.
