Under the supervision and presence of Prof. Dr. Waheed Mahmood Al‑Ibrahimi, President of the University of Mosul, the activities of the Bridge of Mercy project were launched today, Saturday, December 20, in the village of Batnaya in the Telkaif district. The inauguration ceremony marked the official start of this comprehensive humanitarian initiative, attended by Prof. Dr. Abdulrahim Ibrahim Jassim, Vice President for Scientific Affairs, Asst. Prof. Dr. Rafal Hassan Hamed, Vice President for Administrative Affairs, along with a number of college deans. The event also witnessed the presence of Dr. Rabee Yousif, member of the Nineveh Provincial Council, Mr. Raad Nasser, Mayor of Telkaif, Mr. Hasnain, Director of Nineveh Popular Mobilization Security, as well as representatives of the church and various service and cultural institutions in the district.
In his speech, the University President affirmed that the project would become a sustainable annual tradition aimed at building strong bridges between the academic community and the people of Nineveh, reinforcing the university’s role as a pioneering national model that connects knowledge with compassion and service to humanity.
The first day’s activities featured intensive field engagement, beginning with a tree‑planting campaign led by the University President and the accompanying delegation to enhance green cover and promote environmental awareness as part of the university’s sustainability efforts. The tour also included an inspection visit to Batnaya Primary and Secondary Schools, where specialized teams began providing educational and pedagogical support, in addition to service‑oriented assistance that included maintenance work, provision of basic supplies, first‑aid kits, and heaters. The teams also equipped school laboratories and sports areas with the necessary materials—an effort that reflects the integration between university staff and educational institutions to improve scientific and service conditions in targeted villages and towns.
The Bridge of Mercy project stands as one of the most significant volunteer initiatives aimed at mobilizing the university’s health, educational, engineering, and environmental expertise to serve communities on the ground, ensuring a direct response to the needs of districts and sub‑districts across Nineveh Province. The project also seeks to transform academic knowledge into tangible humanitarian action that contributes to sustainable development, reaffirming the University of Mosul’s commitment to its social responsibility and its pivotal role in supporting stability and serving all segments of society.
