Aquatic Biodiversity for a Sustainable Environment

The Women’s Affairs Committee and the Sustainable Development Committee at the College of Veterinary Medicine, in cooperation with the Department of Studies and Planning / Sustainable Development Unit at the University Presidency, organized a workshop titled “Aquatic Biodiversity for a Sustainable Environment” on Sunday, 18 January 2026.

The workshop was presented by Asst. Prof. Dr. Shahbaa Khalil Ibrahim (Department of pathology and Poultry Diseases). It introduced the concept of biodiversity as a fundamental pillar for the health and sustainability of marine and freshwater ecosystems, encompassing fish, crustaceans, aquatic plants, and microorganisms that play vital ecological roles.

The workshop highlighted the importance and benefits of aquatic biodiversity in enhancing ecosystem productivity, maintaining food balance, and purifying water through nutrient cycles. Discussions also identified major threats, including pollution, overfishing, and climate change, emphasizing the need to conserve aquatic biodiversity to ensure sustainable habitats and ecosystem services for future generations.

This workshop is part of a series of activities aimed at promoting sustainable development culture and supporting environmental innovation, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals: Quality Education (SDG 4), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Climate Action (SDG 13), and Life Below Water (SDG 14).
