The Sustainability of Cuneiform Script in Writing Near Eastern Languages: A Workshop

The Studies and Planning Division, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Unit at the College of Archaeology and the Studies and Planning Department/Sustainable Development Unit at the University of Mosul, held a scientific workshop entitled:

“The Sustainability of Cuneiform Script in Writing Near Eastern Languages.” The workshop, presented by Assistant Professor Dr. Muath Habash Khader and Assistant Professor Dr. Suad Aaid Mohammed Saeed, took place on April 14, 2026. It included an exhibition to train students on cuneiform texts. The workshop addressed the sustainability of cuneiform writing, noting that its use extended beyond Mesopotamia. It was used to write languages other than Akkadian, including Elamite in Persia and Hittite in Anatolia, as well as Ugaritic and its alphabetic script on the island of Ugarit in Syria. This demonstrates the sustainability and continuity of the writing system even after cuneiform script fell out of use.
