Department of Archaeology

The Bachelor of Science in Ancient and Islamic Archaeology program is a four-year undergraduate program with a course load of 240 ECTS credits. It aims to prepare graduates with specialized scientific knowledge of the history and antiquities of ancient and Islamic civilizations, while equipping them with the necessary theoretical and practical skills to study, document, analyze, preserve, and manage archaeological sites, buildings, finds, and resources.

The curriculum is divided into eight semesters, with 30 credit hours per semester, according to the attached syllabus. There are common courses in the first and second years, followed by specialized courses in the Ancient and Islamic Archaeology branches in the third and fourth years.

The curriculum integrates history, architecture, arts, archaeological sites and cities, ancient languages ​​and written sources, along with surveying, excavation, documentation, conservation, restoration, geographic information systems, scientific research, training, and a graduation project. The Ancient Archaeology branch includes courses such as Prehistory, Archaeology of Iraq, Geoarchaeology, Sumerian, Babylonian, and Assyrian Texts, and Excavation Methods. The branch of Islamic antiquities includes Arabic calligraphy, Islamic arts, Islamic architecture, coins, pottery and ceramics, manuscripts, Islamic photography and Islamic artifacts.

The Department of Archaeology aims to:

  1.  To provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the history and antiquities of ancient and Islamic civilizations, with a focus on Mesopotamia and related regions.
  2.  To develop the ability to identify, classify, and analyze archaeological sites, buildings, and artifacts within their temporal, spatial, and cultural contexts.
  3.  To equip students with the fundamentals of surveying, excavation, recording, documentation, drawing, photography, and archaeological analysis.
  4.  To utilize archaeological, historical, and written sources, including cuneiform texts, in constructing archaeological interpretations.
  5.  To develop scientific research skills, including formulating research problems, collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data.
  6.  To enhance the use of modern technologies, particularly GIS, digital documentation, databases, and digital photography.
  7.  To prepare students for fieldwork in museums, heritage, cultural, and research institutions.
  8.  To promote the protection and preservation of cultural heritage and respect for legislation and the ethics of archaeological work.
  9.  To develop scientific communication, teamwork, time management, and professional responsibility.

10- Preparing graduates for postgraduate studies, lifelong learning, and professional development .

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, the graduate is awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in Ancient and Islamic Archaeology, in accordance with the approved regulations and instructions.

The program is classified within Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (INQF), in accordance with applicable legislation and instructions, taking into account the requirements of the institution and the ministry upon final accreditation.

Admission is subject to the regulations and instructions of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the university, and the approved study channel in the year of admission.

To be awarded the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Ancient/Islamic Archaeology, students must successfully fulfill all graduation requirements, including :

  • Completing 240 ECTS credits according to the approved study plan.
  • Passing all required and elective courses.
  • Achieving the minimum GPA and graduation requirements.
  • Completing the practical, field, and training requirements.
  • Completing and defending the graduation project according to regulations.

• Adhering to examination regulations, academic progression standards, and academic integrity.

Course equivalency or recognition of prior learning is considered in cases of transfer or course equivalency according to the applicable regulations, and based on a comparison of content, learning outcomes and course load.

Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) program in Ancient and Islamic Archaeology,

A full-time four-year program consisting of eight semesters. It adopts student-centered learning and integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, research, field training, and digital technologies, in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process.

Regulatory Note: The attached study plan indicates a total of 30 credits per semester. It must be confirmed that these credits are ECTS credits, or the official conversion factor must be specified in the program document before adopting them as ECTS credits.

The Program Coordinator is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the study plan, coordinating courses and faculty members, monitoring the achievement of learning outcomes, overseeing training, research, and assessment activities, supporting quality assurance and continuous improvement processes, and coordinating with relevant academic and administrative authorities.
