A PhD Dissertation at the Department of History on: (Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and the Stance Towards the king in Egypt 1922-1952 AD)

Today, Wednesday, September 13th, 2023, the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Mosul, discussed a doctoral dissertation in modern history on: (Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and the Stance Towards the king in Egypt 1922-1952 A.D.), at the hall of the College of Arts. The discussion was attended by a number of department teachers along with postgraduate students.
The study, presented by Othman Nawfal Mohammad Nouri, dealt with the form of the relationship that characterized Al-Azhar Foundation, represented by its Sheikh, with the Kings Fouad and Farouk, after Egypt witnessed, during the royal reign, radical changes at the level of political, social, and cultural systems, especially after the announcement of the Constitution of 1923 A.D., and the accompanying curtailment of the king’s authorities.
This was reflected in the form of the King’s relationship with Al-Azhar Foundation and its sheikh, as the King sought help from Al-Azhar throughout the royal reign in the challenges he faced, due to the societal weight of Al-Azhar and its ability to guide the masses. Therefore, this status qualified Al-Azhar to play a fundamental role in shaping the political scene and mobilizing the street.
The study aimed to clarify the nature of the relationship that brought the king together with Al-Azhar institution throughout the royal reign, by monitoring and analyzing the stances and examining the reasons and motives behind them, in addition to studying the manifestations of compatibility and the reasons for this in most cases between Al-Azhar institution and the king and to what extent the king attempted to employ Al-Azhar at the service of his political and subjective ambitions and aspirations, in parallel with understanding the roles of Al-Azhar Foundation, as a religious institution that carries great weight within the Egyptian society in particular, and the Islamic world in general.
