Master’s thesis in the College of Basic Education on (Belonging among the poets of Udhrite love poetry in the Umayyad era).

The College of Basic Education at the University of Mosul discussed a master’s thesis on (Belonging among the poets of Udhrite love in the Umayyad era), on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, in the (Umm Al-Rabi’een) Hall in the college. Part of it was attended by the Assistant Dean for Scientific Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Raad Ibrahim and a number of the department’s lecturers.
The thesis, submitted by the student (Rasul Amer Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Hasawi) from the Department of (Arabic Language), aimed to reveal the dimensions of belonging among the poets of Udhrite love in the Umayyad era, especially emotional, social and intellectual belonging. After looking at the Udhrite phenomenon as a purely emotional tendency, this study comes to reveal the manifestations of belonging and its dimensions that exceeded the limits of emotion to include the social and intellectual dimension as well.
The study addressed several axes, including: (Emotional belonging among the poets of this era, with the beloved being the main axis from which all other trends of belonging emerged, as well as social belonging, which dealt with the connection of the Udhri poet to his social environment, in addition to intellectual belonging, which embodied the poet’s connection to the religious and political background).
The study reached many results, including: (Reading Udhrite love poetry as a discourse of belonging, not just a discourse of emotion, reveals a tremendous symbolic energy, and places this poetry in its broader cultural context. Hence, my choice of the topic came from a desire to reconsider the Udhrite phenomenon, and understand it as a mirror of the poet’s relationship with his beloved, with his society, and with his thought and belief, which opens the door to a new vision that does justice to this phenomenon and illuminates its aspects that have not been sufficiently studied).
The discussion committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Fares Yassin Al-Hamdani, and the membership of Assistant Professor Dr. Hala Abdel Fattah Al-Rawi, Assistant Professor Dr. Salwa Jaber Abdel Latif, and Professor Dr. Saleh Muhammad Hassan Irdine as a member and supervisor.
