The College of Basic Education held a specialized seminar entitled “Praise and Elegy and Their Trends in Classical Arabic Poetry.”

The College of Basic Education, through its Continuing Education Unit in cooperation with the Department of Arabic Language, held a specialized seminar entitled “Praise and Elegy and Their Trends in Classical Arabic Poetry” on Monday, December 22, 2025. The seminar was presented by Dr. Hala Abdel Fattah, Dr. Salwa Jaber, and Dr. Afrah Muwaffaq. The seminar aimed to explore the close relationship between these two genres, as they are among the oldest poetic forms. Praise, as poetry of commendation and praise of the praised, highlights their ideal qualities, while elegy is composed in praise of the deceased, combining feelings of sorrow with the recounting of virtues. Therefore, the relationship between them is intertwined in Arabic literature. Both focus on highlighting praiseworthy qualities and characteristics, and both rely on sincere emotion and emotional impact. However, they differ in their context: praise is glorification and exaltation, while elegy is glorification and sorrow. The seminar was attended by a group of undergraduate students and professors from the Arabic Language Department.
