Master Thesis Viva in the College of Education for Pure Science entitled “Qualitative assessment of groundwater in Tal Abta sub-district, Hatra district using weighted mathematical models ”

The College of Education for Pure Science, University of Mosul, has done the Master Thesis Viva entitled ” Qualitative assessment of groundwater in Tal Abta sub-district, Hatra district using weighted mathematical models “,

On Tuesday, September 19, 2023, the respected Dean of the College, Assistant Professor Dr. Qais Ismail Ibrahim, the Honorable Scientific Associate and Administrative Associate, the Honorable Head of the Department of Biology, and a number of the college’s teachers were attended the viva.

This study, presented by the M.Sc. Student Thaer Zaid Ibrahim Al-Sallal in the Department of Biology, aims to evaluate the quality of groundwater for drinking and various domestic uses, irrigation and livestock watering, for selected wells from Tal Abta district and some of its affiliated villages located southwest of Mosul city. Samples were collected from ten wells distributed randomly in the study area during the summer and winter seasons, with ten replicates for each well, physical tests were conducted such as temperature, electrical conductivity and chemical tests such as pH and total alkalinity, T. Hardness, Ca. Hardness, Mg. Hardness, sodium ions Na+, potassium K+, bicarbonate HCO3-, chlorides Cl-, sulfate SO4-2, nitrate NO3-, and bacteriological examinations: total number of bacteria (TPC), number of fecal coliform F. Coliform, and the number of Escherichia coli bacteria, with the calculation of irrigation parameters such as (PI, KR, PS, %Na, MH, RSC, SAR) based on the approved international standard methods, with the use of Mathematical models to assess the quality of water for drinking, irrigation and for watering livestock and poultry, as well as assessing nitrate damage using mathematical models to calculate (NPI & HHR).

The results of (WQI) indicated a deterioration in the quality of the water used for drinking and civil purposes for the studied samples, as it ranged between (106.3-297.9), and thus 100% of the water samples were of Unfit and Very Poor quality water.

The Viva committee was chaired by Prof. Dr. Mohammed Saeed Faisal \ University of Mosul / College of Education for Pure Science and the membership of Prof. Dr. Youssef Jabbar Ismail \ University of Mosul / College of Education for Pure Science, Asst. Prof. Dr. Musheer Rasheed Ahmed/ University of Zakho/ Faculty of Sciences and under the supervision and membership of Prof. Dr. Abdul-Aziz Y.T. Al-Saffawi / University of Mosul / College of Education for Pure Science.
