Doctoral Dissertation at the College of Education for Pure Sciences, Department of Biology…

In pursuit of the fourth goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (Quality Education), a doctoral dissertation entitled “Qualitative Assessment of Khosr River Water and its Impact on the Water of the Tigris River in the City of Mosul and its Biological Treatment Using Algae” was defended at the College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Mosul on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
Part of the dissertation defense was attended by the Dean of the College, Professor Dr. Jassim Fatehi Ali, the Assistant Dean for Administrative Affairs, Assistant Professor Dr. Younis Saadi Saeed, and a number of faculty members from the department.
The study, presented by researcher Azhar Younis Ridha Al-Assaf from the Department of Biology, addressed the qualitative assessment of Khosr River water and its impact on the water of the Tigris River in the city of Mosul and its biological treatment using algae. Five sites were selected on the Khosr River and two sites on the Tigris River. Six wastewater outlets located on both sides of the Khosr River were also identified. Water, soil, and plant samples were collected for physical, chemical, and biological tests, including measuring the concentrations of lead, copper, and nickel in the water, bottom sediments, soil, and vegetative parts of the reed (Phragmatis australis) growing along the riverbanks. The results indicated relatively high levels of electrical conductivity, total hardness, sulfate, and dissolved oxygen before the river entered Mosul. Upon entering Mosul, a relative increase was found in the following: biological oxygen demand, phosphate ions, total bacterial counts, and fecal coliform bacteria.
The discussion committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Yousef Jabbar Ismail, and Professor Dr. Hussein Saber Muhammad Ali, Professor Dr. Abl Ahmed Hasan Erdini, Assistant Professor Dr. Yusra Majeed Shihab, and Assistant Professor Dr. Muhammad Hazim Sabry as members, and Professor Dr. Abdul-Aziz Younis Al-Safawi and Assistant Professor Dr. Mira Osama Al-Kateb as both members and supervisors. The Dean of the College presented a letter of thanks and appreciation to Professor Dr. Abd Ahmed Hasan Erdini from the College of Education for Women at Tikrit University and Assistant Professor Dr. Yusra Majeed Shihab from the College of Environmental Sciences and Technologies at Mosul University for their participation in the dissertation discussion of the researcher.
The doctoral dissertation was accepted. Congratulations to the researcher and her supervisors on this scientific achievement.
