Master’s Thesis at the College of Education for Pure Sciences, Department of Chemistry…

In fulfillment of the fourth goal (Quality Education) of the Sustainable Development Goals, a master’s thesis entitled “Bio-ethanol Production from Various Cellulosic Wastes from Alcoholic Fermentation Processes and its Use as Fuel in Car Engines” was defended at the College of Education for Pure Sciences at the University of Mosul on Monday, August 25, 2025.
The study, submitted by the student Nour Al-Huda Ghanim Qasim from the Chemistry Department, addressed the pretreatment of waste using mechanical treatment followed by acid pyrolysis using dilute acids at different concentrations and volume ratios to find the optimal conditions for decomposing the lignan and hemicellulose bonds in the raw materials, followed by alcoholic fermentation using dry yeast. The effect of acid treatment on lignocellulosic materials was also studied using X-ray technology, demonstrating the effect of the acid on converting crystalline forms in the raw material to non-crystalline forms as a preliminary step in breaking down the basic components of the raw material, including cellulose chains, and converting them into simple sugars.
The discussion committee was chaired by Professor Dr. Khaled Ahmed Owayyed, along with Assistant Professor Dr. Ragheed Yousef Ghazal and Assistant Professor Dr. Iman Ismail Ahmed as members, and Assistant Professor Dr. Ahmed Ghaleb Sheikho Al-Azzawi as both member and supervisor.

The master’s thesis was accepted. Congratulations to the student and supervisor on this scientific achievement.
