Department of Chemistry (DCH)
The Bachelor of Education in Chemistry (B.Ed) program at the College of Education for Pure Sciences, University of Mosul, is a four-year, full-time program offered according to the Bologna Process and consists of 240 credit hours (ECTS).
The program in the first two semesters provides students with the fundamentals of organic, structural, and analytical chemistry, both theoretically and practically. In addition, it includes educational courses such as: Principles of Education, Fundamentals of Psychology, Democracy and Human Rights, and supporting courses in Chemical Safety and Security, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Arabic and English languages.
Students in the second year, learn the fundamental concepts of organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry, along with an important branch of physical chemistry. They also acquire knowledge in educational leadership and management, educational technology and its applications, computer skills, and Arabic and English languages. Additionally, they are introduced to the practices of the previous regime through a course on the crimes of the Ba’athist regime in Iraq.
Students’ horizons broaden in the third year, to include other branches of chemistry, namely biochemistry and industrial chemistry, in addition to organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry. They also delve into the foundations of education and learning tools through courses such as scientific research methodology, teaching methods, measurement and evaluation, counseling and mental health, and curriculum and textbook.
The student enters a phase of practical educational preparation and research in the fourth (final) year, where, in addition to organic, physical, analytical, instrumental, biological, and industrial chemistry, teaching methods, practical training, graduation project, teaching thinking skills, and action research are added. This involves preparing a graduation project under the supervision of a professor, which is then presented and discussed using theoretical or practical scientific research methods. Furthermore, practical teaching training is conducted in public schools to enable graduates of the College of Education for Pure Sciences (Department of Chemistry) to acquire teaching skills and apply the knowledge gained over their four years of study in the labor market .Program Cataloge
1. Developing educational and scientific competencies: To prepare distinguished graduates, both academically and professionally, to work in various educational institutions, while instilling a strong commitment to professional ethics and the principles of sustainable education.
2. Developing teaching and leadership skills: To equip students with specialized expertise and skills in the field of education, including modern teaching methods, educational environment management, and the application of educational technology.
3. Promoting applied scientific research: To enable graduates to actively contribute to research and applied projects aimed at addressing educational, environmental, and health challenges.
4. Keeping up with innovation and digital transformation: To effectively utilize modern technologies and artificial intelligence tools in teaching scientific and specialized courses and developing the educational environment.
After successful completion of the Chemistry program requirements, the University of Mosul awards graduate a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree with a specialization in Chemistry.
The program is classified at Level 6 of the Iraqi National Qualification Framework (INQF) in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Iraq (MOHESR).
Admission to the Bachelor of Education in Chemistry program is subject to the national admission policies established by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) in Iraq, as well as the regulations of the University of Mosul. Prospective students must meet all general eligibility criteria for enrollment in the Department of Chemistry at the College of Education for Pure Science.
To obtain a Bachelor of Education degree in Chemistry, students must successfully fulfill all graduation requirements, which include the following:
1. Successful completion of the required credit hours (240 ECTS credits), including mandatory core courses, preparatory courses, supporting courses, and elective courses.
2. Fulfillment of the minimum graduation requirements as stipulated by the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Iraq and the University of Mosul, College of Education for Pure Sciences.
3. Successful completion of all required laboratory work and procedures, application to schools for experimental teaching positions, completion of the research project, and other components of the Chemistry program.
4. Compliance with the academic requirements related to assessment, advancement, and graduation as determined by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Iraq and the University of Mosul, College of Education for Pure Sciences.
Previous learning or completed courses in recognized educational institutions may be credited in accordance with the regulations and guidelines at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the University of Mosul.
Outcome 1: Chemical Knowledge and Molecular Understanding
Graduates will be able to explain the composition, structure, properties, and chemical behavior of matter and interpret chemical phenomena using fundamental principles of chemistry.
Outcome 2: Scientific Communication
Graduates will be able to communicate chemical concepts, laboratory findings, and research results effectively through oral presentations, scientific reports, and written documentation.
Outcome 3: Laboratory Skills and Instrumentation
Graduates will be able to perform laboratory experiments safely and accurately using modern chemical instrumentation, analytical techniques, and computer-based scientific applications while following standard laboratory safety procedures.
Outcome 4: Scientific Knowledge and Professional Competence
Graduates will demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of chemical theories, scientific methods, and the role of chemistry in scientific, industrial, environmental, and technological development.
Outcome 5: Data Analysis and Interpretation
Graduates will be able to collect, analyze, interpret, and evaluate experimental data using appropriate statistical methods and scientific software to reach valid conclusions.
Outcome 6: Critical Thinking and Research
Graduates will apply critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and scientific methodology to design, conduct, and report independent research projects while adhering to professional ethics.
The Bachelor of Education in Chemistry program aligns with the Iraqi National Qualifications Framework (Level 6). Graduates of the Bachelor of Education in Chemistry program can pursue postgraduate studies to obtain a Master’s degree in Chemistry (across various specializations), or Master’s degree in methods of teaching, as well as a Ph.D in Chemistry to conduct research in various fields.
Examination, Assessment, and Grading Regulations
The program employs quizzes, oral or written exams, reports, assignments, mid-term exam and final exams to assess the students throughout the course of study. Compliance with academic integrity regulations and institutional polices regarding academic misconduct, cheating and plagiarism is mandatory.

Graduation Requirements
To obtain a Bachelor of Education degree (Chemistry specialization), students must successfully fulfill all graduation requirements according to the regulations of the Iraqi Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the University of Mosul, namely:
- Completion of the required credit hours (240 credit units) and all mandatory and elective courses specified in the Chemistry program curriculum.
- Achieving the minimum graduation requirements, including the required cumulative grade point average, according to the regulations in force at the Ministry, the University, and the College.
- Successful completion of the graduation project and all laboratory, practical, and applied requirements within the program components.
- Fulfillment of all academic and administrative requirements necessary for obtaining the Bachelor of Education degree.
The Bachelor of Education in Chemistry (B.Ed.) is a four-year, full-time program offered according to the Bologna Process, comprising 240 credit hours. The program adopts a student-centered approach, integrating lectures, laboratory experiments, a research project, and practical school training through both scheduled and unscheduled hours. Assessment methods include oral examinations, quizzes, homework assignments, reports, a midterm exam, and a final exam.
The responsibilities of the program coordinator include the overall coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Bachelor of Education program specializing in Chemistry. The role encompasses monitoring curriculum’s progress, ensuring graduation outcomes are met, continuously updating the curriculum in coordination with department and branch heads. It also involves coordinating academic activities between faculty members and students, supervising laboratories and practical applications within school-based activities, and ensuring compliance with the University of Mosul’s quality assurance policies, the regulations of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and program accreditation requirements.
