Master’s Thesis Defense on “Solving Hidden Node Problem in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN)”

On Wednesday, March 24th, 2021 Eng. Qaied Kitab Gayed ( Postgraduate student at Department of Computer Engineering ) successfully defended his thesis entitled “Solving Hidden Node Problem in Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) Using an Energy Efficient Media Access Control (MAC) Protocol”.The thesis included a study of the effects of hidden node on the performance of wireless sensor networksusingfour different protocols (MAC layer), and six different scales to evaluate network performance which is (Throughput),The Ratio of successful connection of transmitted data(PDR),Real data received during a given time(Goodput), (Average delay),(Residual Energy), and(First and Last dead node) in the network.Sixteen different scenarios have been applied in terms of number of members in the network and the field area to be monitored in order to know what is the best number of membersthatcan bedeployed in a specific field of monitoring and specific performance scales as well. The second version of the network simulator (NS2) was usedfor design and implementation of the proposed scenarios,as it was installed on theLinuxsystemwith the distribution Opent(18.04).Each proposed scenario was repeated five times with fixed settings, but with random deployment ofmembersin each iteration in order to obtain reliable results..The extracted results were analyzed using tables and graphical figures, and the results for the protocols used were compared with each otherusingtables and graphical figures for ease of analysis..The thesis showed results from when the field area was (250 x 250 m2)and the number of randomly distributed nodes is (25) protocolIEEE 802.11it gave the best productivity by (168.9074Kbps).And when the field area was(1000 x 1000m2)and the number of randomly distributed nodes is (100)protocolsTDMAgive the best ratio for the successful connection of transmitted data with an amount (0.25111).
